Saturday 15 August
Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle - 9am - 2.0 Hours
Christopher John
This relaxed outdoor photo walk is designed for people who want to start exploring photography in a practical and encouraging way. You do not need prior photography experience to attend. You can bring a smartphone, compact camera, or any camera you own. Many people feel overwhelmed by technical language when learning photography. This session takes a different approach. Instead of focusing on camera settings, we start with the most important skill in photography: learning to notice light, moments, and compositions. During the walk you will learn how photographers begin to see photographs everywhere — in shadows, reflections, shapes, movement, and everyday scenes. We will explore: • how light changes a photograph • simple ways to frame an image • how moving your position can transform a scene • how to slow down and observe more carefully This is a practical session, so participants will be taking photographs throughout the walk while receiving guidance and suggestions along the way. There is no pressure, no technical jargon, and no expectation of prior knowledge. This workshop is ideal for: • complete beginners • smartphone photographers • people who have recently bought a camera • anyone wanting to become more confident taking photographs

Christopher was very informative about the subject of Sunset photography, from finding out every ones skill level and how he could help with any questions we had, what we want out of the session. Explaining what and how to go about getting a good sunset photo. A smoke hazard stopped us from getting a sunset photo but the session was still a relaxed, informative session which I enjoyed.

I planned this using PhotoPills and positioned myself on the beach knowing exactly where the moon would rise to ensure I got the shot. Whilst capturing the sky image using my star tracker, I couldn't work out why the Milky Way didn't go all the way to the horizon. and just as I was finishing up for the night, the 1/4 moon started to rise so I captured an image of t

It was pre-sunrise and I was up early for work. I hadn't been out to photography anything for over a month, so that's what drove me to take this shot. And, I made the most of it by heading to one our most iconic places, Nobby's Beach & Nobby's Lighthouse. I could see that everything was lining up for a spectacular sunset. Sunset point at Tanilba Bay is aptly named, with expansive water views to the west, sunsets at this location are often spectacular. In order to capture as much as I could in one image without making the sky smaller than it was, I decided to turn the camera vertically and take several overlapping frames that I could 'stitch' together into one single image in Lightroom.
